Small Budget?

I happen to love working with super small budgets because I see it as an opportunity to become really creative. I love creating events that are different and distinctive – not the same ol’ thing. Yes, it’s much easier to do a wedding with a couple that has no budget because they can have whatever they want. But, a great wedding on small budget? Now that’s a thing of beauty. Here are some great money saving ideas:

1. Get rid of the wedding party. It’s amazing how much a wedding party can add to a budget. If anything, have a maid of honor and best man and leave it at that. If you have 20 good friends that you want to participate in your day – invite them. Just being invited is an honor in itself. You can also choose people to participate in the ceremony/reception – hostesses, readers, guest book attendants, etc.

2. Hire a planner with professional friends in the industry. Yes, its extra money in the outset, but a creative planner will be worth their weight in gold. He/she will help you develop your theme and direct you to the best possible people. Planners know who to go to, and often times will have friends willing to help you out! What’s better than that?

3. Think of different themes like… Dessert only reception, Italian bistro, funky 50’s diner theme, or an evening at the theatre with hors d’oeuvres. These types of themes can be fun to plan around, allow you to stay within budget and make for some interesting food and décor. Plus, you guests will talk about it forever because it’s not the same ole’.

Now, let’s talk about a couple of pitfalls that plague couples with low budgets.

1. Hiring friends. Family and great friends are wonderful. It’s wonderful to have people who love you and want the best for you. But my opinion is that weddings are very special events that require professionals who know the procedures to make the event successful. Also, what might happen to your relationship if something doesn’t go right? I tell my brides, you want a vendor you can get mad at, make sense right?

2. Trying to stretch a budget to create an event like some other person on the knot or weddingchannel.com. Not being open and able to change the “mindset” is disastrous. Be open to different ideas, and different ways to do things.

SCE Real Wedding

I am going to start posting some past weddings we have done here at SCE. The first one is...Jenn and Jason! Enjoy!

I had the pleasure of meeting Jenn and her mom at the bridal store I used to work at. She called me a couple weeks after meeting and asked if I would be the coordinator for her wedding at the Broadmoor. I happily obliged! Jenn and Jason were married on June 14, 2008 at the beautiful Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. It was a glorious day! Follow me as we relive this stunning wedding…

The ceremony was held at the Mountain Terrace on the Broadmoor grounds. They invited 150 of their closest friends and family to join them as them as they celebrated their love for each other. Their wedding date was also shared by a set of grandparents that unfortunately had passed before the wedding. Jenn and Jason made sure to honor them with a striking custom candle. The ceremony area was culminated by a beautiful arch – made by the highly talented team from Skyway Creations. The aisle was lined with candles and flowers. During the ceremony, they had a gorgeous song played that was sung by two very special people to them. The ceremony was performed by the bride’s aunt. It was a magnificent and very meaningful ceremony.

The reception was held in the West Ballroom at the Broadmoor. They started the reception by introducing the bridal party into the reception. Not all of the guests knew each other, so this was a great way to introduce the most important people of the event. After the introdcution, the bride and groom shared their first dance as husband and wife. The father of the bride did a welcome toast before we moved into dinner and we also have a blessing done by the bride's aunt. Next they moved on to dinner. They had plated 4 course dinner. In between course, the toasts took place. This is a great option if you are going to have a plated service. You have your guests attention and it also saves time so you can have more dancing after dinner! Both the bride and groom’s cakes were done by the Broadmoor. The bride’s cake was a 3 layer Vanilla Bean Gateaux with Fresh Strawberries and Bavarian Cream. The groom’s cake was truly spectacular! The chef was so proud of the cake; he made a second cake just like it to be cut so they didn’t have to cut it that night. His cake was a chocolate cake flavored with Bailey’s Liqueur and filled with Bailey’s Toffee Mousse. It was a chocolate lover dreams. Truly decadent! After dinner, they partied the night away!

The night was filled with love and affection. It was such an honor to be part of their wedding day. Thanks Jenn and Jason!

Wedding Colors

One of the objectives when starting to plan your wedding is to decide on a theme or think about some colors you would like to include in your wedding. This is a very important task because it sets the mood of your wedding and is incorporated into many aspects of the wedding, from bridesmaids dress to escort cards to favors to ribbon on your bouquet.

Some things to keep in mind with your wedding colors are:
- What time of year am I getting married?
- Which color would I like to do accents with and which one is my main color?
- Where are we getting married?
- Do we have a theme we want to try to include?

Wedding colors change many times and that is ok! Make sure the colors represent what you want to portray for your wedding. To get some ideas for colors, I suggest going to a hardward store and pick out some paint swatches. You can pair different colors together and find great combinations. You can also go here, this is another great way to find some interesting combos! Happy Planning!

I met with a bride over the weekend and she is using dahlias in her wedding, so I thought I would feature it as this week’s wedding flower!

There are over 2,000 varieties of the dahlia – different shape, sizes and colors. It is found in North and Central America and Europe. The size of the dahlia ranges from low as 12" to as tall as 6-8. The flowers can be as small as 2" in diameter or up to a foot. The colors are red, white, purple, yellow, orange and pink. Some flowers are striped or tipped with a different color. The dahlia is available in the summer to early fall. They are typically a low cost flower but a beautiful flower!

The peony is such a beautiful wedding flower. They are a full fluffy flower and also very romantic. The Peony is a treasured flower throughout Asia. There are 30 different species of peonies and comes in 4 different shapes. The peony usually blooms in mid-late spring. Peonies can be quite pricy as a wedding flower – a $4-5 per head to be exact. However, the price may be justified by the large size of the flower heads. If peonies are an out-of-season, the expense may be even greater, because flowers may have to be imported from Northern Europe or from New Zealand. Colors range from white to cream to yellow, and from the palest of pinks to reds to the deepest maroons. The fragrance of peonies is reminiscent of an intense rose scent. A peony bouquet is especially suitable for a wedding with a Victorian theme or with a Chinese theme. Peonies are compatible with the rich colors, heavy satins, velvets, and laces. They are regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage.
